OSC (Orthotic Specialist Centre) services Eastern Health Prosthetic Rehabilitation at Peter James Centre in Burwood East.
At Peter James Centre we facilitate an acute prosthetic rehabilitation program aimed at providing amputees with their first ‘interim’ prosthesis as a part of their early amputee care.
The first prosthesis is received approximately six weeks after amputation, when the wound is seen to be healing well and swelling has started to be controlled. The purpose of this prosthesis is designed for you to establish early mobility and begin gait re-training with the help of a multi-disciplinary team; working closely with physiotherapists and rehab specialists.
You will need regular adjustments and reviews with this first prosthesis as you will continue to see changes in your residual limb; including shape and volume changes in these first few months.
You will continue to work with the team for gait training and until the limb has stabilised you will then be assessed and funding will be requested from your selected funding body for a definitive prosthesis.
